This is the sixth post on what we are calling the Jesus Prayer, otherwise known as the Lord’s Prayer. Here we look at the teaching about asking for our daily bread.

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

As I write this post where Jesus taught his followers to ask God to meet their daily needs, the survivors of the horrendous earthquakes in Turkey and Syria are confronting their losses. It is impossible to comprehend the well over 30,000 souls lost. One turns away from contemplating the horror, pain, agony of those burying their loved ones and even more so of those who lived for hours and days under rubble where they could not be reached. How can we in light of these disasters, played out nearly continually on our screens, have the temerity to ask God for bread?

In light of this and compared to what we considered in previous posts including statements about the Father, in heaven, the kingdom, his will, this request may seem mundane, even banal. Asking God to give us bread on a daily basis? What significance could that possibly have?

I have learned and am learning a lot from our daughter. A very successful cookbook author, writer and social media influencer, she and we, her parents, share a faith in God and in the Son of God, even if we have some different perspectives…
