Don, there is so much interesting thoughts in here and so much to respond to. But, the comment about debunking physicalism is the key to me. I also agree totally that science neither supports nor rejects physicalism. My problem as I think you share, is that the drivers of our culture like the media and education, all tend to treat the philosophical-quasi religious belief system of physicalism as "truth" in the sense that science does indeed confirm it. And I am frustrated with writers like Brian Greene, Steven Pinker, Weinberg, Krauss and many others serve as evangelists for physicalism and the critics of their outdated belief system are seldom heard.
Your comment about not being able to debunk physicalism through science deserves more thought on my part. It's what most of my effort on Medium has been. I'm trying to show that what Brian Greene and others claim science says is not what science says. But, you may be right.
As for how to define matter and forces? Ha! That question used to be easy, but no more. Carlo Rovelli says there is no reality other than relationships or interactions. Field theory says all is a field. Sean Carroll says it all is a wave function in Hilbert space. String theory says it is miniscule vibrations. I don't know. But then, it appears, that maybe no one knows.
