Good question. From my standpoint, his frequent references in the popular consciousness literature including his work with Tononi on IIT, his books such as The Feeling of Life Itself, his engagement with Chalmers, and his early work with Francis Crick on the neural correlates of consciousness qualify him as a leader. As a neuroscientist, it appears you may take issue with that. I'd be interested in understanding why.
