Hello Don, as I have used the term “physicalism” I mean the view that nothing exists other than matter and forces. At its heart it requires a denial of what I refer to as “something more” and others refer to the supernatural, which is anything real beyond what we know of matter and forces. (I have problems with that as I think much of what we consider now supernatural may turn out to be part of the created universe.)
As it relates to the universe, physical means matter and forces and physicalists are left with the issue of answering how matter and forces originated. The common answer is the singularity at the Big Bang or the eternal inflation prior to the Big Bang. Both push the question deeper. But, then, anti-theists say that attributing the emergence of matter and forces to some idea of God also pushes it further back: where did God come from?
