I have done that more than you realize, Graham. I do it all the time. Here is what I run into: what works better? Physicalism? You and I agree that is a failure. Eastern philosophy? There is much to be gained from it, but I run headlong into the nature of self, of distinction between me and Brahman. It doesn't work for me as much as I like about it. Vague spiritualism? Lacks content and rational answers. Traditional Christianity, despite its great mysteries and problems, still provides answers to both the rational side of me and the mystical side which says that I am touched by what is there regardless of what I may think.
