Interesting comment, Steve. I suppose it is irrelevant if one has determined that all that is has come about by accident and therefore there can be no meaning to this. The only thing that matters, apparently, then are those things like virii which can greatly affect our brief lives.
That seems to me to undermine much of the motivation for science. Why try to understand what matter is, what the cosmos really looks like, what is the nature of the human mind when all that matters is what contributes to our immediate health and well-being.
That view seems to support the idea that science was motivated by believers in a creator who saw great marvels and mysteries and wanted to understand better what it was all about and ultimately what it means for us. If there is no meaning, then what a ridiculous and futile exercise.
