Paul, you said that Goff’s statement that scientists and philosophers should seek to find the truth even when it conflicts with what they prefer to believe to be an ad hominem attack. Really? It is natural, I’m sure you would agree, that we humans seek to confirm our presuppositions rather than seek conflicting evidence. What I see in Goff’s statement is that one quality of scientists and philosophers should be to work to overcome this natural tendency. But, even those trained in science and philosophy will find it difficult and perhaps impossible to completely avoid confirmation bias. I see this very evident in Brian Greene’s new book “Until the End of Time.” The presupposition of physicalism is on full display and, as I point out in my review on Medium, with the absolute commitment to one dogma comes an anti-scientific perspective that includes avoidance of conflicting data. I’d be interested in your thoughts on that.
