Thanks again Linus, appreciate your thoughts on this. I was going to comment on one other point from your first comment. The association between religious belief and horrific historic violence and mayhem is indisputable, and is a frequent connection made by those who find religion intolerable. But the terrible violence of the 20th century did not fall directly into that category as it was more carried out in the name of atheism. The role of passionate religious believers in the inhumanity so often displayed is certainly a black mark on religion, including my own Christianity. However, because it violence and cruelty are associated throughout history with religious and unreligious alike, we must look to the cause of that within human hearts.
