There are a great many, including me, who believe that God has given an answer to that question in the revelation of the Word. In that case, we are told, at least as interpreted in traditional theology, that God created ex nihilo and stands outside of creation but continues to be actively involved in it. That seems quite clearly to require two ontologies.
